How to get pink shirts

There have been requests for information about Will Stahl and his "Real Men Wear Pink" T-Shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Here is the information from the end of our story in this week's Standard.

For more information on ordering a shirt to support the effort, visit the AGR website (www.ukagr.com).  To learn where and how donations are put into action, visit www.Komen.org.

Governor coming to Todd

It's official, Gov. Steve Beshear is coming to Todd County on Oct. 8 for what is being described as a "meet-and-greet" with anyone who wants to see him. This is unprecedented for Todd County, so we thought we'd give the bloggers a chance to come up with some questions for Gov. Beshear.

If you had a couple minutes of his time, what would you ask him?

Tax Rates

Monday is what we call meeting-rama. That is the night when most of the local public bodies meet on the same night in an attempt to keep us from covering all of them.

Of course, we are just kidding about that... ahem, anyway, this round of meetings will deal with the new tax rates.

Here's the kicker: The Todd County Fiscal Court raises it's property tax rate from 9.3 to 9.4 cents per $100 of real property and some people go nuts!

Add in the cities' tax rates and some people will sit in ash-cloth in the streets.

As a business owner and property owner in Elkton and Todd County I feel the pain when taxes go up but I also know that services (what little we can afford here) aren't free.

So, in the coming weeks we will be doing a comparison of the surrounding communities' tax rate to see if the howls of injustice are warranted.

Though I wonder if the cost of living here makes up for the difference between a 15.5 tax rate in Christian County and 22.5 in Hopkinsville? Somehow I doubt it.

Elkton Knights

Two weeks ago a group of locals got together to try and establish a group to promote the area.

Today many that attended that meeting returned.

The first decision was that the group would be focused on Elkton and not the county as a whole.

Afterward the group moved to come up with some project proposals.

Two of ideas mentioned was signing for Elkton along 68/80 and getting county wide broadband internet.

The group elected officers and came up with a name before ending the meeting.

Deana Power and Danny Bruce McGhee were elected Co-chairs.

Lorie Good was elected secretary while Eric Good was elected treasurer.

The group decided to name the group the “Elkton Knights” in memory of Libby Knight, who the group felt was a driving force in the community during his lifetime.

The next group meeting will be at 5 p.m. Monday Sept. 8 at the old court house.
