Sheriff's race

Even though it is seven months away, all anyone can seem to talk about is the spring Democratic Primary and especially the Sheriff's race.

Who do you think has the early lead?

The three who have signed up for the race so far are (in order on the county clerk's sign-up list):

• Arthur "Joey" Johnson

• Giles D. Taylor

• Bobby E. Miller

Note: Current Sheriff W.D. "Billy" Stokes has said he is running but will not file until January.

Also, on Giles Taylor for Todd County Sheriff facebook page there is a discussion page where you can ask questions about anything and he will answer them. There has been some very good questions and answers. Go there and look. I think there should be a public debate and since there hasn't been one, here's a good place for people to start.

Didn't Joey Johnson get fired at the drug task force in Hopkinsville? That's what I've heard. He's also been acting crazy over the people who have Giles Taylor either posted in their yards or vehicles. That's all we need is another Stokes in office.

And why is the only thing Joey can come up with is that Giles did not live here long enought. Giles lived in Butler county, then moved here. Giles has proof. He never lived in Tennessee. I would like to see Joey's proof. And if that's all he can come up with, that's sad. Giles Taylor will be the best candidate we have. Not one time, have I heard him slander anybody like Joey has. Like it was said above. We do not need another Stokes in office. If you elect Joey, that's what will happen. He has already started with the lying. I think Gerald Barnett and Joey Johnson are scared that Giles Taylor will win this election and they won't have one of their "GOOD OLE BOYS" in office.

I have to agree with the last post. Giles Taylor may be a superb candidate, but the public needs to hear his qualifacations, from him. I am a 4th generation Todd Countian and I'v never heard of this guy. I believe most people would be open to giving this gentleman the benefit of the doubt, but we've all seen what electing a snake oil salesman into power can get us. We need a comprehensive profile of each candidate, which we'll likely get in the paper. It's also important we see a debate or two before we take such a hard stance for or against anyone. I think most of us can agree there is only one candidate we can rule out at this point. His last name rhymes with Jokes......

Hello. My name is Giles Taylor and I am running for the office of Todd County Sheriff. I'm married to my childhood sweetheart, Moira Taylor. We have two children. A young man, age 12, and my baby girl, age 4. My wife is a school teacher at Sango Elementary in Clarksville, TN where she has taught 3rd grade for 11 years. She also teaches at Austin Peay University, where she has been employed for 10 years.

I am employed as a deputy sheriff with the Logan County Sheriff’s department under Sheriff Wallace Whitaker. I became involved in law enforcement in 2001 as a technical advisor for Sheriff Kenneth Morris, who was at the time, the president of the Kentucky Sheriff's Association. In 2003, I graduated the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Program (The Kentucky Police Academy). I became a certified Police Officer and remained in Morgantown, KY until 2007, when I went to work for the Todd County Detention Center as a training officer. I am currently a commissioned Police Officer serving the Logan County Sheriff's Office. I am also certified as a Master Instructor in eleven areas of law enforcement including Krav Maga (Israeli Hand to Hand Combat), National Rifle Association, Law Enforcement Firearms instructor, less lethal devices, edged weapons, and the use of force for law enforcement. I also occasionally teach criminal justice at Draughon’s Junior College. I am a member of the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), the Kentucky Tactical Officers Association (KTOA), and the World Fast Draw Association.

I believe I have something to offer the good people of Todd County. It's where I call home and want my kids to grow up. I believe that by working closely with the Judge Executive and members of the Fiscal Court, we can build a working Proactive Sheriff's Department. I look forward to meeting with you and answering any questions or concerns you have over the next coming months. Vote for me, May 18, 2010 and together we can make a difference. I appreciate your support.

We, the people of Todd County, need someone who will fight for the little people. NOT A GOOD OLE BOY!!!! Giles Taylor is not a GOOD OLE BOY. He will fight for those of us who are not part of the GOOD OLE BOY click. He will be fair and honest. And not partial to anybody. That's what Todd County needs!!!!! And Giles is not a snake oil salesman!!! He is an honorable, trained, educated police officer.... We do need a debate. Maybe someone could tell Mr. Johnson and Mr. Taylor that....

From what I've been told from several members of law enforcement In Logan Co., Mr. Taylor does work for the Sheriffs Department but not in the law enforcement context, as an animal control officer which is a special deputy position.

Also, Mr. Taylor states that he worked at the Jail in Todd Co. but doesn't say why he chose to go to work in the neighboring county rather than staying in the county which "he calls home".

And all this talk of Facebook supporters just seems childish to me..there used to be a time when elections were decided based on character and merit.

I just believe if you're gonna run for an office, you should be honest with the public.

I wonder how we decided to elect our officials before facebook and myspace came along? I'm sure glad we have them around now so that large volumes of random people can make our decisions for us. It seems odd to me just how many grown adults access these sites to justify their beliefs and/or values through occasional postings. Kinda sad really.

I don't believe people are using facebook to run a campaign. I believe they are using it for the newer generation who would like to be more informed. In the olden days, most people just voted for people because they liked them. They did not know their past or what education they had. I believe the newer generation likes to be aware of who they are electing in office and facebook gives the people the advantage of knowing somebody before they vote for them. Just my opinion. I still believe there should be a debate for all candidates involved so all of us can be aware of who we are electing into office. So the past does not repeat itself. I mean the last election we didn't have facebook and look who we elected into office. Yeah, we did a real good job there. Not to say it won't happen again, because it could. I am sure the past sheriff promised a lot of things that he could not do or would not do. I am not saying facebook will make the election better, I think it just better informs us of who the person is. And maybe the candidate that didn't get but 16 supporters before he closed his account is upset because another candidate has more supporters. The truth hurts doesn't it. People do things when they are scared that is so funny.

As far as Giles Taylor, he is a sheriff in Logan County. He is a animal control officer, but also works the road. He works the road as much as he works the animal control division.

After working for the Todd County Detention Center, he chose to work for Logan County because there weren't any position available here in Todd County or he would have worked here.

And he has been honest with the public. He hasn't said one false thing. I believe other candidates have lied on him. But he hasn't. He has even took up for the other candidates.

I believe other candidates are not being truthful about him. I believe he will be the best for our county. He has the education and the work history to prove it. Compared to the other candidates, he is in the lead. He has never been fired from an agency. He has never had a warrant out for his arrest. And he has never embezeled money. Unlike others who are running or are in office at this current time.

This is a copy of Giles Taylor's Facebook page. I thought this might help some of you who have been lied to by other candidates.:::::::::

The question has arisen, is Giles Taylor qualified to run for the office of Sheriff.
the anwser is:
YES I AM
The election law states:
At the time of election,(candidate) must be at least 24 years of age, a citizen of Kentucky, has resided in the State 2 years, and one year next preceding his election in the county and district in which he is a candidate.
(copy from The Secretary of State)

The Kentucky Office of the Attorney General has made opinions reguarding
"residence" the actual document is to long to re-copy here but states in several different ways the definition of residence and how it is established. It is generally based on fact with key factors being:

Payment of occupational taxes in kentucky;
Payment of real property taxes in Kentucky;
Payment of intangable personal property taxes in Ky.
Ownership of real property (home) in ky.
Kentucky automobile registration;
Kentucky drivers liscence;
Registration as a Kentucky voter.

KRS 118.015
Defines resident used in reference to a canadate in a state,district,county,or city election shall mean actual resident, without reguard to the residence of the spouse of the candidate.

Prior to my fileing to run for the office of sheriff I researched the law myself because the law seemed un-clear in reguards to " one year next preceding his
election in the county and district in which he is a candidate.
(copy from The Secretary of State)"

I contacted the legal section of The Secretary of State and the Kentucky Attorney Generals Office where i recived the above information and this explanation.

The May primary is not an election. It is a nomination.
" A person must live in the county one year prior to his election or in this case one year prior to the November 4th 2010 general election. Meaning a person must be living here in Todd County before November of 2009.

I MEET ALL THE REQUIREMENTS AS DEFINED BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE KENTUCKY ATTORNEY GENERAL
The good Lord willing, as of the 2010 general election I will have lived here for one year and four months.
My competitors have the right to challenge my residence as outlined by the Secretary of State and have my case decided by a Judge.
I urge my them to proceed with their challange now if they feel compelled to do so,then maybe we can get to the business of repairing the sheriffs office.

Otherwise this is just a distraction from the issue at hand and a political ploy intended to scare the voteing public.

He couldn't work in this county. In order to work here, you wouldn't be able to work in Logan County. Todd County only hires officers that have gotten fired from other counties and the officers aren't allowed to go to any other counties.

You know that it is pretty sad when you as a candidate, gets on a site and writes this crap and can't even leave a screen name. Anonymous=AKA Giles Taylor, You might as well sign each of you comments. I read this bull and I can't stand to see a cue ball politician such as Giles Taylor come to our county and talk about the so called good ole boy system. Truth is, He can't handle the truth, so he calls it a system. He went to Guthrie for their parade and totally embarrassed himself by looking like he was the President and had his secret service Posse with him for protection. He must be afraid of the voting public for all I know. What a joke.Todd county does need a change in the Sheriffs' office, but we don't need another Sheriff that is scared of his own shadow. If you need protection during a parade, you'll need protection on every call you answer. That is the one thing that Joey Johnson would never need. He would never be afraid to do the job. Joey is just going to be Joey and do a great job. He is not bad mouthing anybody and he is not running because his name sounds like a former state trooper detective/chief of police that everybody is familiar with. As far as this face book crap goes, 249 people on the web doesn't even mean they can vote here. I am in law enforcement and I know Joey personally. He is the ONLY man on the ballot that anyone in their right mind would even think about voting for. Let's compare. A man with integrity, and love for his county, or a man that is a Dog catcher and calls himself a deputy. 30 years of experience or a person who we know nothing of his character. We already know that he lies, He is a dog catcher with deputy status. So, that is the big qualification to be our next sheriff. I don't think so.

In Taylor's defense this blog had settled down. Why get it started back up? I hope Taylor (or whoever posted in his behalf) realizes the error with the negative postings.

I think the truth is that Johnson and Taylor are being blamed for bad mouthing each other around town when in fact they are NOT. The "other" candidate is the one who is trying to stir up the negativity. He is the one who is campaigning on duty and passing out his cards. He is the one telling the people of Todd county things about Johnson and Taylor that are completely false. As for the debates, I do not recall hearing any of the candidates say they did not want a debate. Do your homework Todd County before you vote! Don't base your vote and opionions on anonymous posts. Let this die down and we will find out the true character of the candidates in the debates!

He hasn't lied one time about anything and I don't believe he is the one posting these ads. I believe they are honest citizens of Todd County. Just because you don't agree with him doesn't mean you have to slander his name. As far as the parade, I don't believe those guys were his secret service men. He isn't scared. I believe those were his supporters and Cop1 maybe your scared that he has more supporters than your candidate does. I believe if Todd County wants a change, you need to support Giles Taylor. I think it's important our citizens see how well each Sheriff candidate performs in different situations, therefore I propose we simulate some test trials for them to react to in the field prior to the election.... Kind of a field day I guess. Some ideas I had were... 1- Simulate a mock incident at the Food Giant, then see how many of the candidates park in the "Handicapped" space upon arrival. 2- Stage a tax withholdings auditor on the square, then judge who ran from him the fastest. 3- Give each candidate a 2 week allotment to see who can have the most false accomodations printed about themselves in the Standard. Some suggestions include Kentucky Colonel status, WMD training, or displaying their "kitty cat rescue from a tree" certification status. Seriously, we can't do any worse...... And isn't the Mrs. running for the clerk's position?

I urge everyone to do some research on Giles Taylor I have and I was a loyal supporter at first but I have changed my mind. He was dismissed from Morgantown Pd, he was a certified law enforcement officer that was working at our jail. That says alot to me, why would someone certified be working there. Also found out that he liked taking things that belonged to our county while working there. Only after he put his name into the sheriffs race did he return the items that he had stolen from the jail. These are cold hard facts, like I said before he definatley had my attention to begin with but he just seemed to good to be true. As for his postion in Logan County he is a dog catcher and from time to time he takes calls, but his main job is chasing dogs down. Now if he was so fantastic and qualified why would Logan County have him chasing dogs instead of real criminals. I'm asking that everyone do you research on all our candiates, especially the ones that are to good to be true

Giles never denied being a dog catcher. At the time, the only position open was an animal control officer. He made more money here at the Todd County Detention Center. And as far as taking items from there, that is a ball face lie. He donated items and his time to the jail, but has never taken anything from the jail. And while everyone does there research make sure it is from a reliable source. And I still don't understand why none of you have spoken with Mr. Taylor. Why not get it from the horse's mouth instead of unreliable people. Also, he quit Morgantown. He was not fired. You do realize people can get into trouble for slandering others. It is called being "LIABLE". Tell the truth instead of falsehoods.....

It's sad you don't have the confidence in your fellow Todd Countians to have the knowledge and ability to govern their own people. We are not the hicks that Sheriff Stokes has made us out to be. Todd County is full of intelligent people that have lived here their whole lives and we don't have to have an "outsider" with big ideas that are not attainable to tell us what we need. Just go back and look at Sheriff Stokes' campaign promises. Grants,( Wal-Mart) most qualified (carried his certificates around with him while campaigning)answer all calls (just didn't say it would be State Police) no special deputies (of course he says his now has special training). We need someone that can restore creditability and respect for our county NOT another one like Stokes.

I'm curious to see how any of the candidates will find manpower to maintain at least some coverage around the county. Our current Sheriff will likely leave office with more of a financial mess than any of his predecessors, therefore there's no doubt money will be tight. I know several of the past Sheriffs have use unconventional ideas such as Special deputies, but thats not the answer long term. As of right now, there is only one that works closely with law enforcement and that's Mr. Larry White, whom I trust fully. But, on the other note of who ever gets sheriff this go around "IS" going to have a mess to deal with after this sheriff.

Is it not possible for the Sheriff's office, KSP, and the constables to work out some type of coverage for the county 24 hours a day? At least have someone "on call" so to speak. I'm relatively sure that KSP has only 1 trooper assigned to Todd County, but between him and our elected officials I believe we can do better.... Any suggestions?

He may be a decent man, but he undoubtedly needs to be replaced immediately.

Chasity, Billy may be a good person, but he has made us the laughing stock of the whole state. I travel around law enforcement circles and they always ask me about my Crazy &(* Sheriff. Thats embarrassing. I only hope that Joey Johnson can restore some dignity back to the sheriffs' office.
