181 construction better than nothing

The Kentucky 181 entrance (from the stoplight to the court square) into Elkton being widened as part of the governor's six-year road plan is a good thing and it will help the city and those who travel through.

With that said, it makes us wonder if it was the right place to start fixing 181. We have been told that if 181 is to ever be straightened out then it will be done in piecemeal sections over several years.

That means that for at least a few years, maybe more than six with the state's money problems, the only construction will be in Elkton and not in the deadly curves north of Clifty, the stretch from Tress Shop to the railroad tracks or the dangerous intersection near North Todd Elementary.

Still, as one official said, we are glad to at least get something since we haven't been on the road plan list in a long, long time (some say, if ever). It is just a shame that it might not be the best use of the money right now.

The entire road should be straightened and have passing lanes on hills and the people of Todd County shouldn't accept anything less.

To really fix state highway 181 it needs to be completely re-built from the ground up , and not just some patch work.Highway 181 really needs to be repair from highway 68/80 all the way to Clifty,Ky and into Mulhenberg County,Ky into Greenville,Ky and Central City,Kentucky. This is going to take a major road construction projects and repair work on highway 181 in Todd County,Ky and Mulhenbery County,Kentucky.

Ryan, have you heard whether or not the widening from courthouse to stoplight will also include adding sidewalks to stoplight on one or preferably both sides of the new wider road. I asked Judge Green and he was unsure. Even better would be one side to be made wide enough to be a bikeway/walkway.

To go ahead and add the sidewalks in while the machinery and manpower are onsite I'm guessing would probably cost about half of what it would cost to bring that back for the project later. We know we're going to need to extend sidewalks to 68/80 at some point because more and more industry and housing is going to be built there... what better time than now with the road widening project?

Why does the city of elkton-ky need highway 181 widen from 68/80 to the old courthouse/public square ? ( this looks to be a waste of public funds and taxpayer monies to me ). There are more areas that need to be repair more than this section does on highway 181.Could it be its being widen just because of elkton-ky being the county seat of todd county-ky and not because it needs to be widen. There are areas on highway 181 that should be fix and repair , because its a safety issues.

Why is there even a consideration to widen highway 181 from 68/80 to the elkton-ky public square. This is total nonsense and a total waste of time and money.I been on this section of road of highway 181 from 68/80 many times and there is nothing at all wrong with the section of road and highway on highway 181.( there is a bad smell and feeling about this project , to me anyway ) There are many many many more areas on highway 181 that needs work on a whole lot more than this planned project does.

Let's clarify that the "widen" is the term that is used by the governor's office when in reality the project includes more than that. The bridge is in need of repair and the bridge itself needs to be widen so that two vehicles can safely pass at once with more than a few inches to spare. The bridge is also receiving damage when farm equipment is a little to wide and still tries to pass through. The road itself will not turn into a four lane road but will widen in some points to include a small turning lane so that traffic does not back up. I agree that the entire road needs repair but some work is better then nothing when it comes to the current governor's administration.

I doubt very much if we see this road project start before 2010 and maybe later than that , who knows. We need to see alot more facts and details about this future road project. The facts are still there are alot more areas on highway 181 that need to be fix and repair alot more that this section of highway 181 does from 68/80 to the elkton,ky public square. This is just very simply a waste of tax payers money with the budget shortages the state of ky is facing at this time.
