Sheriff says Taser incident blown out of proportion

Today in our neighbor newspaper, the Kentucky New Era, Todd County Sheriff W.D. "Billy" Stokes said the whole alleged situation concerning a Logan County man filing a criminal complaint over handicapped parking and an alleged incident where the man says he was threatened by Stokes with a Taser has been blown out of proportion.

That seems odd to us since the situation is very serious and should be treated that way. If it wasn't a serious situation then why did it come to criminal charges possibly being brought against the Todd County's sheriff?

Could it have been resolved that night? Could Stokes have just moved his vehicle when the man complained?

If this was any other political figure in Todd County would it not be just as serious a situation?

Can anyone explain how this is not something that shouldn't be reported and given the attention it will get not only here in Todd County, but in Hopkinsville, Russellville and all over the state?

We are perplexed to say the least!

If Billy Stokes was truly "on assignment" as Mr.Draper has stated ,why on earth would he have his wife and child in the vehicle with him and what was he doing at WalMart? The paper also states that he parked in the handicapped space because he was in a hurry because of an accident and two other emergencies in Todd County. My question here is what was he going to do in regards to these 3 incidents? Was he going to bring his wife and child along if he responded to these 3 incidents or was he going to take them home and then respond to the accident and 2 other emergency calls? Seems to me he wouldn't be in much of a hurry if he chose the latter.Another question-who furnishes the fuel for this vehicle? I certainly hope we taxpayers aren't footing the bill for fuel so he can make a WalMart run.
I have several relatives who are disabled and have to use the handicapped parking. It really is truly frustrating for them to go to a public place with handicapped parking and not being able to utilize it because someone who is not handicapped has taken that space.I don't care how much authority Billy Stokes thinks he has, he should have known better and parked elsewhere.

I don't see one thing wrong with the Standard reporting the news. As long as you base your headlines on factual and accurate information then you are performing a public service.

I just hate it that this is being covered outside of our county. I find it all to be quite embarrassing.

Was this Sheriff incident blown out of proportion as well?

Todd deputy faces DUI charge in Hopkinsville

A Todd County deputy sheriff who resides in Hopkinsville was arrested early Sunday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (first offense), Hopkinsville police reported.

Michael Joseph Kline, 28, of Oak Tree Villa Apartments, was stopped on Fort Campbell Boulevard after a city police officer observed him speeding and crossing the center line, according to the report.

Kline told the officer he drank about four beers at a local bar. His blood-alcohol content on a preliminary breath test was 0.115, police reported. In Kentucky, the legal limit for intoxication is 0.08.

It is time to step down Mr. Stokes. If not for the sake of your family's name and what might be left of their pride...if not for the embarassment the citizens of this county have been caused...if not for the loss of respect for law enforcement officials...if only because this will probably be the last chance for it to be of your choice. The time to bow out gracefully has passed. This will not end well for anyone, so please, just realize that it is time to go.

Kudos to Mr. Craig and the staff for this week's paper. Talk about a lot to digest! The transcripts from the dispatch calls should be the nail in Billy's coffin on the menacing & misconduct charges. "I was fixin' to tase him" and "I'm waiting for a guy to come out that I think I have a warrant on"...both in black and white! Liar, liar pants on fire, Billy! This would be a riot if it weren't so sad. I feel sorry for Stokes' family, though. I hope everyone remembers that they deserve some consideration for being dragged into this, even if it's just by being related to him.

Who cares where he was , what he was doing and who he was talking to? I really could care less , I live in the county , but I am in the city , so I really could care less what he is doing , if he needs to go on somewhere and let someone else do the job then so be it , if not let it go. The state will take care of it and they be ones to make that decision , if he should stay and if he shouldn't . Everybody should stay out of the business , and let the ones that can do something , let then take charge , no matter what you or I say it isnt really going to change anything ...
