Sheriff lays off deputies — again

It has been confirmed that Todd County Sheriff W.D. Billy Stokes has laid off his staff for a third time this year.

The sheriff asked the Todd County Fiscal Court last week for $3,259.56 so he could keep paying his deputies.

The court, at the end of a budget cycle, said they just didn't have the money so they refused.

(They also pointed out that Stokes is suing the members of the court and that he hasn't given his bank balance — which is required by ordinance — to the court. So they wouldn't know what to give him.)

What they did say is that Stokes should have taken the advancement from the state. That would have been enough to float the office for several months.

Stokes, of course, has said he wouldn't take the advancement because he can't trust the court to pay it off if something were to happen to him.

Look in this week's Standard for more on the issue!

Sheriff Stokes should be ashamed of himself. He is making a mockery of Todd Co. Because of his pride, he is leaving Todd Co. citizen vulnerable to criminals. He is further proved his ignorance by going on television that reaches all of northern Alabama, southern Kentucky, and Middle Tennessee; and telling every criminal in ear shot that Todd Co. is wide open. He should either resign or the citizen should seek his immediate removal from office.

Okay, so... I don't understand.

I don't live in Todd County anymore, so I don't know all the ins and outs of this, but how could Billy's family be personally responsible for a loan the Sheriff's office might take out? It seems to me that in his capacity as Sheriff, he's acting on behalf of his office, not himself or his family. It's the Sheriff taking out a loan to operate his department, not Billy financing a car for his family, or taking out a mortgage. The loan seems meant for the purpose of floating the Sheriff through the yearly dry period, a loan he would pay back when the revenue returns in the fall. If something were to happen to Billy, the Sheriff's office would be responsible for the loan, not Billy's family - right? Or am I missing something?

Todd County is ultimately responsible for the advancement. There is no way Stokes could be held responsible for it. This is just another way for Stokes to pout and play games with the court. This is further supported by the fact he will not reveal to the court what is in the Sheriffs bank account. They need to dump him and get a real Sheriff.

Why are the so called citizens of todd county that are complaining so much go else where to buy gas, groceries, medicine, hardware or out to eat? They dont even support the businesses in the county but want to gripe and complain? Everyone needs a reality check before they speak and point the finger, the sherriff dont even support the county he goes to walmart, a park board member bitches but goes else where to buy gas, groceries, medicine and takes money away from the funding of the park. Yes Danny Laster it is a shame, but where do you shop, do you donate to the fund raising in todd county or do you go else where? there would have been more money in the park funding if there wasnt a round a couple a months ago about who was going to take the ball pictures and then a park board member who takes photos was giving free photos to the friends to support herself did that not take away from the park funding, if thats the kind of members on the board maybe we dont need a park board, although this person has raised so much hell and supposed to represent the city, she doesnt live in the city, do your homework Nancy Camp. right is right and wrong is wrong go buy the buylaws like you expect everyone else to. I support My County 100% guess who I am.
